We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Katie Brandon, the vibrant and accomplished Broking Manager at Aviso Broking.
In her role at Aviso, Katie has experienced several highlights throughout her career. Being with Aviso for nearly 12 years, her story serves as an inspiration to newcomers in the industry.
Q: Describe your role and responsibilities within Aviso Broking.
A: As a Broking Manager, I oversee a team of four brokers, 2 internal account managers & 2 assistant account managers. I take great pride & satisfaction from leading this great team of both experienced & upcoming brokers. Beyond leading my team, I manage one of the firm’s larger portfolios, with $800,000 in income, encompassing clients from a variety of industries with diverse needs.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in the broking industry?
A: Like many others, I found my way into the insurance industry by chance. At 18, fresh out of high school and in need of a job, I came across an ad for a receptionist at a local insurance broker just 15 minutes from home. I applied, got the job, and the rest, as they say, is history—I’ve been here ever since! Now, after almost 12 years in this incredible industry, I can’t imagine doing anything else!
Q: Can you share a key moment or project in your career that has significantly impacted your professional growth?
A: I’m not one for the spotlight, but I was particularly proud to receive the Queensland General Manager’s Award at the inaugural 2022 Aviso Awards. It was a meaningful recognition of my dedication to supporting the business and my colleagues. I was also very proud to receive the 2024 People Award at the Aviso Broking Awards.
Another pivotal moment for me was when I had the opportunity to move into the South Brisbane office at Aviso Broking, where I had the privilege of mentoring and developing our junior brokers as part of the Development Team. Working closely with senior leaders and executives reinforced my passion for developing people, growing the business, and my leadership skills.
Q: Walk us through a typical day in your role at Aviso Broking.
A: No two days are ever the same, whether from a broking or management perspective. Each day brings something new, keeping us engaged and constantly learning. There’s always an opportunity to make a difference, which makes the work even more rewarding.
Q: How do you think Aviso Broking differs from other Insurance Brokers?
A: Aviso Broking is incredibly supportive of its people, placing a strong emphasis on career development and growth, no matter the path—whether it’s broking, claims, marketing, or learning & development. For me, what truly sets Aviso Broking apart is the culture of support and collaboration. That openness is invaluable for fostering growth and confidence among our people.
Q: How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
A: I make a concerted effort to switch off in the evenings and on weekends, dedicating that time to my horses and my lovely French bulldog, Pippa. I’m family-oriented and cherish the time I get to spend with them, especially given how hectic our workweeks can be. It’s definitely easier said than done!
Q: Outside of work, what are your favourite hobbies or activities?
A: Anyone who knows me will tell you that my life outside of work revolves around my horses! I spend most weekends from March to November competing at agricultural shows across Queensland and major events like the Ekka and Sydney Easter Show. It’s like a second job—only with more hay and fewer emails!
FUN FACT: Aside from her passion for horses, Katie used to dance ballet and jazz, among others.
