Aviso Broking is hosting its 10th Breast Ever Brunch on October 3, 2024, at Rydges South Bank, in support of the Mater Foundation Chicks in Pink initiative to recognise survivors, generate funds for those in need, and boost breast cancer awareness.
Since 2014, Aviso Broking has partnered with the Mater Foundation Chicks in Pink, which was created so that no woman would have to go through breast cancer alone.
Empowerment Through Stories: Survivor Testimonials
One of the most powerful aspects of the Breast Ever Brunch is celebrating survivors, honouring their journeys, and fostering a sense of community among those affected by breast cancer.
As part of its commitment to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Aviso Broking believes that hearing firsthand accounts of courage and resilience can motivate others to seek support and take proactive steps in their health journeys. These stories remind us that we are never alone in our struggles.
Tina Wilkinson, Aviso Broking Head of Risk and Compliance
Tina recalled that when she first learned about her cancer, her children handled it differently, with both of them being incredibly supportive. Tina’s mother, on the other hand, tends to still try and wrap her in cotton wool. But all throughout her journey, her husband has been her absolute rock.
Tina added that being diagnosed with cancer has made her gain a greater appreciation for growing older. Her advice for newly diagnosed women is that there are a lot of support groups and organisations, so this is not a journey women need to go on alone. “If one group or organisation doesn’t feel right then try another group. If you are unsure about the advice you are receiving, then get a second opinion”.
Naomi Chaloner, Resilium Accounts Officer
Naomi was diagnosed early February 2019. She felt a lump on her breast and after an ultrasound and a biopsy, it came back as breast cancer. She recalled saying, “it was just a matter of what do we do now.” She added that the chemo really takes its toll and impacts your body in a number of ways – including hair loss, but had a very stylish wig called Erica.
Naomi was grateful to have support from her family, colleagues, and a great Doctor. After a mastectomy followed by 6 months of chemo and 3 further operations, she has come out the other side.
“As my aunt said, you just need the soldiers (chemo) to go in and do all their work. My family have been very supportive as chemo leaves you with very little energy, so my family had to pick up the slack. I have checkups once a year and here I am 5 years on and all clear,” shared Naomi. Her advice to anyone facing cancer is just to try and keep a positive outlook. Everyone’s journey on this planet is unique to them, with or without cancer.
Noak Broman, Allsafe Financial Services Director/Financial Adviser
Noak’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2022 after discovering a lump. Noak was terrified of her mortality and thought about their children and the uncertainty they faced as a family.
He shared how the cancer has affected his family both in negative and positive ways. With ongoing treatments and side effects, Noak stated that it has been mentally exhausting for them, and finding the strength and energy to continue was difficult. But in light of this, it has brought his family and friends much closer together. “We now have more appreciation of our health and the other good things we have in life that we previously took for granted. It has made us realise we need to live life to the fullest.”
For families going through the same battle against cancer, Noak’s advice is to surround yourself with good people who genuinely care about you. “Their love and support will get you through the hard times. Also, have your household finances in order and be as organised as possible to avoid putting added stress and pressure on yourself.”
Community Impact: How the Event Supports Breast Cancer Awareness
Since starting this initiative 10 years ago, Aviso Broking raised $53,000 for the Mater Foundation. Every donation contributes to services and research supporting breast cancer, as well as items that make a tangible difference to patients, such as mastectomy bras, wigs and scarves which create a positive, significant, and real impact.
The Breast Ever Brunch, which coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month held in October every year, plays a crucial role in raising awareness and encourages individuals to take charge of their health, all while enjoying the company of some incredible women and gaining access to valuable educational resources.
